This program is scheduled to begin spring 2022
The Medication Assistant program is a natural progression of knowledge from the Certified Nursing Assistant to the Licensed Practical Nurse. Medication Assistants are used in the longterm care setting to assist the nurse to administer medications to the large population of patients. Our institution currently has a practical nursing program approved by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. Our Certified Nursing Program (CNA) is approved by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. The Program Director is in the process of writing the application to submit to the Office of Long-Term Care to renew the license for an active program on our campus.
The Medication Assistant program prepares individuals to administer prescribed medications; observe and report patient reactions and side effects; and perform related emergency and recording duties under the supervision of nurses and/or physicians. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, common medications and their effects, taking vital signs, oxygen administration, medication administration and application, record-keeping, and patient observation. Medication Assistants are required to successfully complete an education program and pass a certification exam before being allowed to function in the role of Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) in a nursing home.
The Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) program will consist of 7 credit hours. Five (5) credit hours will be dedicated to didactic education in the traditional classroom setting. Two (2) credit hours will be dedicated to skills lab and clinical education.
