The Medication Assistant program is a natural progression of knowledge from the Certified Nursing Assistant to the Licensed Practical Nurse. Medication Assistants are used in the longterm care setting to assist the nurse to administer medications to the large population of patients. Our institution currently offers a Practical Nursing program approved by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. Our Nursing Assistant program (CNA) is approved by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education and the Office of Long-Term Care.
The Medication Assistant program prepares individuals to administer prescribed medications; observe and report patient reactions and side effects; and perform related emergency and recording duties under the supervision of nurses and/or physicians. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, common medications and their effects, taking vital signs, oxygen administration, medication administration and application, record-keeping, and patient observation. Medication Assistants are required to successfully complete an education program and pass a certification exam before being allowed to function in the role of Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) in a nursing home.
The Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) program consists of 7 credit hours. Five (5) credit hours is dedicated to didactic education in the traditional classroom setting. Two (2) credit hours is dedicated to skills lab and clinical education.
