Business - Accounting Option, AAS

The Accounting option is a two-year associate degree designed to prepare students for entry-level and clerical accounting positions within business and governmental organizations. Learners receive training in recording business transactions, financial statement preparation, and how to use tools to make managerial decisions. Training in tax, payroll, and financial statement analysis is also provided. Particular emphasis is placed on training in computerized accounting software and the creation of financial spreadsheets. Related course work is studied to assist the learner in becoming well- informed in all aspects of the business environment.

Program Learning Outcomes

In addition to achieving the institutional learning outcomes, accounting program graduates will be able to:

  • Prepare financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Interpret and analyze financial statements
  • Understand how financial transactions affect the profit and financial position of a company
  • Use financial information to make informed managerial decisions
  • Complete the transactions and entries for an entire accounting cycle using a computerized accounting software
  • Prepare an individual federal income tax return to minimize tax liability
  • Process a payroll period including computations for gross pay, tax deductions, employer tax expense, and period-end reporting
